The Misconception of Ownership That’s Holding You Back

Running a business can feel like carrying the weight of the world. You push hard, determined to succeed. But you’re exhausted, stuck, and wondering why the success you dreamed of still feels so far away.

Over the past fourteen years of working with scores of small business owners, I’ve noticed a common thread: most who suffer the pain and anxiety of an underperforming business do so because they’re living under what I call the Misconception of Ownership — the false belief that control over the business comes from handling or overseeing everything personally.

That’s not control — it’s a trap.

Owners who fall into this trap often end up grinding harder, working longer, and achieving less.

The Trap: Personality and Power

Most owners focus their attention on generating more sales and keeping customers happy. Of course, these are critical functions. But over the years, I’ve discovered another factor that’s just as important — and often overlooked: personality style.

I’ve incorporated Transactional Analysis Psychology and the study of Personality Types into my coaching practice for over eight years. The subject is too broad for this article, but here’s the bottom line:

Every owner develops patterns for interacting with the world long before starting their business. These patterns shape how they achieve recognition, handle power, and measure success.

Here’s the counterintuitive part: many of the behaviors, beliefs, and strategies that help you succeed before owning a business are the very ones that often start working against you once your company grows. The harder you double down on what worked in the past, the more exhausted, frustrated, and stuck you become.

That’s the trap.

Are You Making Progress, or Digging a Deeper Hole?

How do you know if you’re really making progress — or just digging deeper while hoping things will “work out”? Here are a few red flags:

  • If you spend every day putting out the same fires, then you’re not leading — you’re firefighting.
  • If you’re buried in issues and never get to growth, then you’re stuck in survival mode.
  • If you’re too mentally drained to think clearly, then opportunities pass you by and threats go undetected.

Insight, Not More Involvement

It’s not easy to realize that you might be making things harder for yourself without even knowing it. But think about this way: If you search Google for “How to Grow a Small Business,” you’ll find over 800 million results.

And still, nearly 50% of small businesses fail within five years.

Clearly, information alone isn’t the answer. There’s a Missing Piece.

I’ve seen dramatic improvement in owner results when they understand their personality style and use targeted delegation and leadership tools. With focus and little effort, they become more impactful, effective, and in control.

I’ve personally experienced this too. Knowing my personality style — and how to use it to my advantage instead of my detriment — has made all the difference in my coaching business, my relationships, and even my own sense of calm and peace.

Most owners don’t need to work more. They need more self-awareness to unlock their business’s next level of growth and success.

Beware of Self-Sufficiency: “I’ll Figure It Out”

Many owners pride themselves on their ability to figure things out on their own. And there’s no question — it’s a useful skill, especially when resources are tight.

But self-sufficiency is a double-edged sword. It slows growth and can lead to neglecting crucial improvements. Yes, given enough time and effort, you can probably figure out almost anything. But when growth is key and competition is fierce, that mindset can be the very anchor holding you back.

Don’t let “I’ll figure it out” keep you from growth, success, and freedom. Leveraging others’ knowledge, skills, and insights is the fastest way to scale your business.

Your Next Step

Here’s the hard truth: the same mindset that created your current challenges will not reveal your breakthrough.

If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and nearly everything in your business is a grind, it’s time to get a new perspective, reset, and get back on the right path.

Just think — a new idea here, a different perspective there — and suddenly you’re back to building a business that serves you, not the other way around.
